Mary Poppins

I got the opportunity to design the Nightmare Toys for the Mary Poppins rental package at Kansas City Costume Co. The show package was missing this scene. My team and I created 21 individual characters. Some had specific descriptive names while others I made up based on material I had available.

The Wooden Lady

The script asks for “A Wooden Doll with Pearls” I made the body suit out of a foam material used for bra making. I used fabric markers for the wood grain and over dyed the suit for texture and shading.

Valentine

This character starts as an actual prop doll. The children fight over it and throw it into their doll house. With some Theatrical Poppins magic, he comes alive. His long fingers appear first out of the doll house window.

I designed him based on Victorian rag-dolls and used his name literally.

James and The Giant Peach

This is one of my favorite design projects to date. The script is very vague with tremendous creative license. The budget limitations and time constraints added to the challenge of this show.
